Highlighting

To highlight a text on a web page, simply select it with your mouse.  Because selected texts are shown as white letter on blue background, you won't see the highlight immediately.   Simply click somewhere else on the page to deselect the text, and you'll see your text highlighted in the color you defined for that website (by defaut, that color is yellow). Alternatively, select a color in the color picker (see below), and the selected text will be highlighted in that color.

Highlighting is not automatic in the following cases :
- when you select text to copy it in another place;
- when you have blocked auto-highlighting on the current website (see "Color picker" menu below)
- when automatic highlighting is globally disabled in the menu (see "Yooper menu" below).

When highlighting is not automatic, you can still highlight the selected text manually by choosing a color in the color picker, or by right-clicking on the selected text: select "Highlight the selection" in the context menu. However, highlighting is not possible in input/edit fields
.

To remove a highlight, right-click on it, then select "Remove this highlight" from the context menu.  You can also remove highlights via the web pages (see below)

All Yooper's functions are accessible via only 5 buttons in the status bar (bottom right corner of the Firefox window).

If you don't see these buttons after installing Yooper, make sure that your status bar is visible, by selecting "View", then "Status bar" in the Firefox menu.

Menu in the status bar

Yooper menu
Clicking on the leftmost button in the status bar allows you to log in Yooper or to access help.  Follow the instructions to log in.  Once done, the red button will become green: whenever you highlight text, it will be permanently saved.  When you re-open Firefox later, you'll be logged in again automatically.

To log out, click on the same button to get this menu again, and select "log off".  You can still highlight text, but it won't be permanently saved.

To highlight text when auto-highlighting is deselected from this menu, select the text you want, then right-click to get the context menu and select "Highlight the selection".  Or choose a color in the color picker menu (see below)

You can select the global default color for highlight.  The color set for a given website has precedence though (see color picker below).

Select "Send feedback" to send us bug reports or suggestions on how to improve Yooper.

Color picker
The button in the middle shows the color for the website currently displayed in the window.  To change this color, click on the button and select a new color from the list.   Select a highlighted text with your mouse again to apply the new color.  By selecting the white color, you can "erase" a highlight, or a part of it.

To de-activate auto-highlighting on this website, select "Stop auto-highlight on this site".

Undo

Click the third button to undo the last highlight you have made on the current page.  (You cannot "redo" it afterwards.)

Memory helpers
Click on the fourth button to access memory helpers.

  • "View Summary" opens a new tab in Firefox.  That new tab shows you the highlights of the website you came from, allowing you to focus on its main message. (see "Web pages" below for more details)
  • "Hide highlight" replaces all highlighted texts by this text in the current page, making them unreadable.  Exercise your memory and try to recall the text.  Temporarily see the text by placing the mouse over the highlight for one second.  Click "Hide highlight" again to restore the text (or click F5 to refresh the page).
  • "Remove highlights" applies to the current page and is permanent.  You will be asked to confirm the removal.  If you have the same page opened in several tabs, highlights will be removed in all tabs.
  • "Search all highlights" opens a new tab in Firefox.  Enter keywords and click "Search" to get the corresponding texts that you have highlighted in the past, on any page.

Sharing
Click on the right most button to share the highlights on this page.  (See e-mail compatibility)

Web pages

You can access Yooper's web pages by clicking "View summary" or "Search highlights" in the status bar menu (see above).  You must be logged in.

The left side of the page shows the list of scratchpad and websites : click on one item, and its summary will appear on the right.  If auto-highlights give you too many summary pages, consider the following:
  • Activate auto-highlight only when you want to highlight a page (see "Menu in the status bar" above).
  • To remove an item, click on it, then use the delete button on the right of the menu, then save the page

About the summary page:
  • It displays all the text that you have highlighted in the current website.
  • To select a highlight, click on it.  To select several highlights, press the mouse button when you are on the first one, then hold the button and move the mouse to the last highlight, then release the mouse button
  • To reorder the items, select one (or more) item, drag-and-drop it where you want it to be, then  save your changes.
  • To move a highlight to a scratchpad, select it, drag-and-drop it to the scratchpad link, then  save your changes.
  • To copy items to another program, select them, then click the copy button
  • To remove individual highlights, select them, then click the cut button, then save the page.  This will also remove them from the original web page(s).
  • To delete the summary page, click the delete button on the right of the menu, then save the page.  This will also remove the highlights from the original web page(s).
  • To permanently save your changes to the summary, click the "Save" button.
